Cali Hardcore Band Switches Gears on New?Record

Like any natural resource, music is often defined in terms of geography. In California, for example, we find a rich surplus of hardcore music: a subgenre of punk rock fostered on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 1980s, whose youthful grittiness belies the sunny postcard image of the Golden State. The raw, and in some ways rudimentary, aspects of the genre, combined with the sheer accessibility of it in California, make hardcore a popular jumping-off point for young musicians all over the coast and often lead to further exploration of rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. But what does it sound like when hardcore grows up? Can one mature emotionally within the genre, or is that by definition a departure? Certainly, if anybody would know, it is Ceremony, one of the most respected bands to succeed in the tradition started by bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Fear. And now, with the release of their fourth full-length, Zoo, Ceremony has become one of hardcore?s greatest challengers, too. Recently, I took a call from lead guitarist Anthony Anzaldo to talk about Zoo and the band?s new partnership with Matador?Records.

Soft spoken and super friendly, Anzaldo is probably not the guy you would picture behind the brutal guitar work of Ceremony?s older material. He?s a pop music junkie who loves artists like Justin Timberlake, Madonna, and Prince, and he?s not alone: ?We have a very diverse taste in music in the band,? he told me. ?Andy, our other guitarist, we?re on the same page now. There?s some big rap and hip-hop fans in the band that I don?t really do too much of, but we?re all accepting.? It may be this acceptance of their divergent influences that led to the band?s newest incarnation in Zoo: a relatively clean, comprehensive album that leans more toward late-1970s punk than their seething interpretation of ?80s hardcore. Both fast and slow, creepy and upbeat, Zoo finds Ceremony working through a more complex range of emotions than previous records, making for a rewarding?listen.

A departure this may be for the Bay Area-based five-piece, but according to Anzaldo, it?s the only way a full-time band can keep their sanity. ?We don?t really stop or go on hiatus or take breaks,? he explained. ?The writing/recording/touring cycle has never ended since we put out our first full length [in 2006] ? so writing new music is what makes it not monotonous. It?s exciting to write new stuff and test our boundaries. I feel like, if we wrote the same style of music and the same record over and over again, we would have gotten burned out by now, but hearing the end result of the music that we create makes it still very?exciting.?

The excitement doesn?t end there for Ceremony. Zoo marks the band?s first release with Matador Records, a prominent indie label whose roster includes artists like Sonic Youth, Interpol, and Kurt Vile. This week the band kicks off a tour that includes dates in Australia, Canada, and Europe. Having seen the influence of California hardcore music all over the world, Anzaldo had a few words to say about how Ceremony fits into the legacy: ?I think for us it was easy because it?s really accessible here. Not only that, but the bands that are from these geographical areas have molded this sound ? L.A.?80s hardcore, that sounds like a specific thing. That sounds a lot different than the late-?80s East Bay?scene.?

The scope is certainly widening for Ceremony, and with the help of Matador, more people than ever will be exposed to their music. But regardless of where hardcore is headed and how Zoo will be perceived within the genre, Anzaldo says they only plan on doing one thing: ?We?re gonna do what we always do, which is get in a van in Northern California, leave for 30 days, and play sick?shows.?

Found some pictures when I was rearranging my hard disk. This was few weeks back ago, when I was getting a two days weekend holiday back to KL. Went a new place named Red Carpet Avenue which located just behind Sunway Giza, PJ. It was still a quite new place, if I'm not mistaken, it opened in June of 2011, owned by Encorp Strand. When I been there, no much people surrounding and still have some small parts was under renovation. But the environment and atmosphere just the?exactly?same with Sunway Giza, a place for chilling in the night. Cafe, bar, pub, restaurant, you can find all there in once.

The earlier?reservation?made, The Museum here we go. The Museum Restaurant & Bar, decorated with the dim lights and romantic old songs, it's very enjoyable to have a dine over there. We had a simple set dinner which included soup, main course, dessert and drink. Here is the address:

SEATTLE (AP) ? The gem Dan Haren tossed Thursday night looked awfully familiar to Albert Pujols. Except this time instead of Pujols getting fooled by what Haren was tossing, he was helping the Los Angeles Angels' right-hander put together one of the finest efforts of his career.

"He makes good hitters look pretty bad including myself, he has in the past," Pujols said. "He is pretty amazing when he keeps the ball down.

Pujols had three hits, including his 450th career home run, and Haren struck out a career-high 14 to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.

The Angels and Mariners met for the first of 19 games this season and Pujols, a newcomer to the AL West rivalry, made his presence known immediately. He lined a two-run shot off Seattle starter Jason Vargas (5-4) with one-out in the top of the first, and added line-drive singles in the fourth and sixth innings. It was just his third three-hit game this season.

And those three runs proved to be plenty for Haren (2-5), who tossed the sixth shutout and 16th complete game of his career. He allowed four hits and one Seattle baserunner to reach third base. Only one other pitcher in Angels history had more strikeouts without allowing a walk than Haren did against the Mariners.

Haren matched his career-high of 12 strikeouts when he got Michael Saunders looking to end the eighth inning. He was given the chance at the complete-game despite starting the ninth at 110 pitches, but struck out Alex Liddi for the fourth time, got Ichiro Suzuki swinging, and closed it out by getting Kyle Seager to ground out.

After struggling with a sore back for the early part of the season, putting together that kind of performance was gratifying for Haren.

"Even pitching at 80 percent I should get better results than I have been getting in prior starts. I think it was obvious tonight that my stuff was better and I was feeling better in general," Haren said. "I'm happy obviously to win a game. I forgot what it felt like."

The 32-year-old Pujols is the fourth-youngest player in baseball history to reach 450 homers, behind Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., and Jimmie Foxx. Noted for his lack of power in his first two months with the Angels, Pujols displayed plenty of pop on the 3-1 pitch from Vargas, lining it off the facade of the second deck in left field with a thud for his fifth homer of the season and second in three games.

Pujols also stole a base and made a heads up play in the fourth inning, when Suzuki lost track of the number of outs and Pujols advanced to third after Suzuki caught the second out of the inning. He was stranded there when Erick Aybar popped out to end the inning. Pujols stole second and scored on Kendrys Morales' RBI single to left field in the sixth.

"This game comes and goes. I think the main thing is to be positive all the time and continue to make sure to make good adjustments," Pujols said. "Today I swung the bat pretty well, but tomorrow is a new day, you have to try to be consistent."

While Pujols continued to show signs of his bat waking up, Haren snapped a four-game losing streak with one of the finest outings of his career.

Haren picked up his 11th career win against Seattle and made it look easy for most of the night as Seattle failed to get a base runner between the second and sixth innings.

"I stayed with what was working and they were going to have to adjust to me," Haren said.

Saunders led off the sixth with an infield single. That ended a streak of 15 in a row set down by Haren and was Seattle's first hit since Dustin Ackley led off the bottom of the first with a single that slipped under Howie Kendrick's glove. Saunders ended up at second after a stolen base, but Haren got a pop up from Ackley and struck out Liddi to end Seattle's first scoring threat.

Suzuki led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on an infield groundout, but was stranded when Haren got Jesus Montero waving at a pitch off the plate and froze Mike Carp on a 3-2 pitch for his 11th strikeout.

It was the 13th 10-strikeout game of Haren's career and topped his previous career high of 12 accomplished twice, the last time coming in 2008. Seattle manager Eric Wedge was not pleased with how easy Haren made it look.

"We didn't make him make any adjustments. He just kept doing the same thing throughout the course of the game. That just can't happen," Wedge said. "We've got a lot of young ballplayers, but they are far enough along they've got to do better than that.

With his latest film Cosmopolis set to capture the imagination of the Cannes crowd on Friday, and the finale of the Twilight saga set to drop later in the year, Robert Pattinson's stock has never been higher in Tinseltown.

Rumour has it however, that he could be about to gain a whole new army of fans, with sources linking Pattinson to a role in Catching Fire, the forthcoming sequel to The Hunger Games.

Word is that Lionsgate want Pattinson and his prodigious cheekbones to take on the role of Finnick Odair, a former tribute with an eye for the ladies, who gets dragged into the Third Quarter Quell (a Hunger Games contested by previous winners).

Now while we're slightly sceptical as to whether Pattinson would really want to throw his lot in with another teen franchise post-Twilight, the fact that his Water For Elephants collaborator Francis Lawrence is now filling the director's chair could make this one a goer.

If he does accept the role, expect future Hunger Games premieres to take on the hysterical quality of their Twilight counterparts. In the meantime, you can see Pattinson in more adult fare, when Cosmopolis opens in the UK on 15 June 2012.

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia and Western and Gulf states pledged more than $4 billion in aid to Yemen at a Riyadh conference two days after more than 90 Yemeni soldiers were killed in a suicide attack, deepening concerns about al Qaeda's presence in the country.

In a statement issued in London, seven aid agencies called for urgent food and other aid to head off a humanitarian disaster. They said almost a half of Yemen's population did not have enough to eat

At the Riyadh conference, Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, pledged $3.25 billion of a total $4 billion in aid.

Riyadh, which already provides oil and military aid to its impoverished neighbor, convened Western and Arab Gulf nations in a lavish new hotel hung with crystal chandeliers to see how they can help Yemen push ahead with reforms and tackle its poverty and lawlessness.

"I assert one more time our support to Yemen to back all the phases of the political initiative to help achieve security, stability and prosperity in facing the threats of extremism and terrorism," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told envoys.

The donor group, which is co-chaired by Britain, was discussing political developments since President Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down in February, ending his three-decade rule in the Arabian Peninsula state after nearly a year of mass protests.

Another meeting, specifically directed at aid pledges, will be held in Riyadh in late June, with a ministerial meeting to follow on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly in September.

"The future for Yemen is not about one-off donations. The future for Yemen is about the process that's already been set in train for the transition of that country," said British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt after the meeting.

Burt said Britain had pledged an additional $44 million on top of its existing aid to Yemen.

"More than $4 billion was pledged today. But the significance of today was it was important to reconfirm the support of such a large group of countries for Yemen," Burt said.

Monday's attack on a military parade was the latest violent incident in a country wracked by political turmoil, where the army has split into rival factions and much of the south has fallen under the control of an Islamist militia allied to al Qaeda's local wing.

Saudi Arabia and Western countries have watched with mounting alarm as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP, has taken advantage of the lawlessness to set up a base capable of planning sophisticated international attacks.

"This (aid) shows the Yemeni-Saudi relationship is quite strong and Saudi Arabia is cognizant that the stability of Saudi Arabia depends on that of Yemen," said Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr al-Qirbi.

In early May, Washington said Western and Arab intelligence agencies had foiled a bomb plot aimed at a passenger airplane. In October 2010, AQAP had tried to send bomb-laden parcels to the United States and in 2009, a bomber from Yemen was caught trying to ignite explosives on a U.S.-bound flight.

In London, Penny Lawrence, international director at Oxfam, said donors were being short-sighted by focusing solely on politics and security in the country.

"Failure to respond adequately to the humanitarian needs now will put more lives at risk, further entrench poverty and could undermine political transition in the country," she said.

MORE NEEDED

Wednesday's Riyadh donor meeting was aimed at strengthening the Yemeni state and returning a semblance of economic stability to a country where 40 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day.

Yemen's modest oil exports that were a source of foreign exchange were hit by repeated attacks on pipelines last year. Yemen is rapidly depleting the water in its aquifers, and by some estimates the capital Sanaa may run out of water in the coming decade or sooner.

The planning and international cooperation minister told the conference his country needed an initial $2.17 billion to help stabilize the country, fight militant attacks and ease a humanitarian crisis.

It required a further $5.8 billion in future to develop the economy and national infrastructure, with $3.7 billion needed by 2014, he added.

As the meeting began, Yemeni Finance Minister Sakhr al-Wajih told reporters he would be happy if his country achieved economic growth of 1 percent in 2012, and that even this modest goal relied on foreign generosity.

Yemen is likely to run a $2.5 billion budget deficit this year, he added. But he was unable to say by how much the economy had contracted during the political turmoil of 2011.

"The (Saudi) contribution will support development projects agreed upon," Prince Saud said, without giving details on how the money would be disbursed.

Some $3 billion of aid pledged by the Friends of Yemen group when it first met in 2006 has still not been delivered, the government said in February.

Yemen's deputy finance minister, Jalal Yaqoub, told Reuters: "Saudi Arabia has shown great generosity... Yemen has to increase its capacity to absorb these funds efficiently. This money must be translated into projects that citizens can actually feel."

Countries from the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, attended the meeting, as did the United States, the European Union, France, Egypt and Russia, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

In April the IMF resumed lending to Yemen, approving the payment of a $93.7 million loan to help it address a balance of payments deficit that worsened during the political turmoil.
