A day after the mayor of Tampa said he was prepared to call off next week's Republican National Convention if Tropical Storm Isaac hits the bay area as a major storm, Florida Gov. Rick Scott assured conventiongoers that "Tampa is open for business."

"We're a hospitality state," Scott said on CNN. "We do this every day."

Tropical Storm Isaac, which brought heavy winds and rain to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Thursday, was expected to reach hurricane strength before reaching the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Florida Keys.

According to the National Weather Service, Isaac's most likely projected path would take it just to the west of Tampa as a Category 1 hurricane--with winds between 75 and 85 mph--on Monday, making landfall in the Florida Panhandle sometime Tuesday. (One computer model had the storm pass right over Tampa; another had it hitting New Orleans.)

While the site of the GOP convention--the Tampa Bay Times Forum--would be within the city's mandatory evacuation zone should winds reach 96 mph, Scott urged the 50,000 people expected in Tampa to not change their travel plans.

Scott said his office conducts conference calls twice a day with state, local and Republican officials to discuss contingency plans, and that the convention organizers would ultimately make the "hypothetical" call to cancel the event.

"If something happens, we're going to be ready," Scott said. "But Florida's used to this. We're a tourism state. We're going to have a great convention."

According to Reuters, though, authorities "have not ruled out the possibility of postponing or relocating the Republican convention if the storm takes direct aim at the city on Florida's central Gulf Coast."

"Absolutely, we're prepared to call it off," Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said on CNN on Wednesday. "I mean, safety and human life trump politics. I think the RNC recognizes that. The organizers, certainly Gov. Romney, recognize that."

"These officials have been working together on the convention for the past 18 months," Scott said earlier Thursday. "The possibility of a hurricane has been part of that planning process. All that's required for those plans to be activated would be for there to be a hurricane and hopefully that will not happen."

"There is no such thing as cancelling," RNC communications director Sean Spicer said on CNN's "Starting Point."

But the carefully-worded statement from convention chief William Harris--issued Thursday afternoon--leaves some wiggle room:

The Republican National Convention and the Republican National Committee, working in consultation with the Romney/Ryan campaign, are in regular contact with the National Weather Service, Governor Scott and local emergency officials in an effort to track and understand the potential impact of the storm. Governor Scott and local emergency officials have assured us that they have the resources in place to respond to this storm should it make landfall, as our primary concern is with those in the potential path of the storm. We will continue to work closely with them and federal officials to monitor the storm and discuss any impact it might have on the Tampa area and the state of Florida. We continue to move forward with our planning and look forward to a successful convention.

The storm has sustained winds of just 40 mph. "However," the National Hurricane Center said, "environmental conditions are favorable for rapid intensification, which could occur if the cyclone develops a well-defined inner core."

Tortilla Soup - FRUGAL FITNESS

Ingredients:

• 2 Tbsp. corn oil
• 3 corn tortillas , cut into 1/2-inch strips
• 2 garlic cloves
• 1/2 cup onions , chopped
• 1 jalape?o , seeded and chopped
• 16 ounce can chopped tomatoes
• 2 quarts roasted chicken stock (see recipe below)
• 1 Tbsp. ground cumin
• 1 avocado
• Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
• Salt and pepper

• Bones from Roasted Chicken
• 6 peeled and halved carrots
• 1 bunch fresh parsley
• 2 large onions with skins, halved
• 2 Tbsp. kosher salt

Directions:

To make chicken stock:?Place all ingredients in a stockpot along with 8 quarts of water. You can use the bones from?Cristina's?Roasted Chicken??recipe. Simmer until all vegetables are soft (approximately 45 minutes). Strain the vegetables. Cool and refrigerate overnight. Or if you are lazy like us, we used pre-made chicken stock :)To make the soup:?Heat corn oil in a stockpot and saut? 3 corn tortillas, cut into 1/2-inch strips.

In a food processor, chop the garlic, onions and seeded jalape?o.

Add the onion, garlic and jalape?o mixture to the pot and saut? for 10 minutes. Add the can of chopped tomatoes along with 2 quarts of chicken stock. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Add ground cumin and simmer for 10 more minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Transfer soup to a blender and puree until smooth. Strain into a clean pot. Garnish with chopped avocado and shredded cheese.

What Happens After Death

Kendra (Alger) Amrine at age 16, from an article in the Tracy Press in 1992.

My first crush was a girl named Kendra Alger. ?I was seven years old. ?We had just moved from a town called Milpitas in the southern curve of the San Francisco Bay Area to a town called Tracy at the edge of California?s Great Central Valley. ?We settled into the Tennis Village neighborhood and Kendra lived a few doors down from me on Renown Drive. ?I had never seen shiny platinum hair quite the equal of hers. ?She was sweet and gentle-hearted, and although I didn?t really have a term for it at the time (I didn?t know what a ?crush? was), I found her fascinating.

Living on the same street for a couple years, and being in the same grade in a small town, we saw one another periodically over the years. ?She was always kind, polite and thoughtful. ?She went on to college, married, and had four children. ?While celebrating her wedding anniversary with her husband recently, on August 16th, she died suddenly. ?She was 35. ?It was probably a stroke. ?Now her Facebook page is filled with friends who (knowing her better than I ever did) are testifying to her extraordinary generosity as well as her devotion to her family and her church.

Raymond Lo has a very different story. ?He lived to 68. ?But Raymond Lo ? my wife?s uncle ? was larger than life. ?I?ve never met anyone with a greater thirst for learning and life. ?When I first met him, he was in his mid-fifties and?teaching himself gymnastics?on a set of rings, pommel horse and parallel bars that he had made for himself in his garage. ?A former architect who had established a successful lumber export business, he took me and my soon-to-be-wife to several outstanding Chinese restaurants around New York City and peppered me with questions about how to do various gymnastics skills.

That was just his way, always learning something new. ?And if you tried to tell him that people in their 50s cannot simply pick up gymnastics from scratch, he would have laughed and done it anyway. ?Raymond Lo was a lifelong student, a soldier, an architect, an entrepreneur, a businessman, a martial artist, an occasional gymnast, a golfer, a world traveler, proficient in several languages, an expert in everything from woodcarving to sushi to the proper way to use an Indiana-Jones-style whip ? and the list goes on and on. ?Having amassed some wealth, he was, quietly, extremely generous to friends and others in need. ?He was like Superman but with kids and a much better sense of humor. ?An excellent family man, he loved his children and grandchildren something fierce, and I only hope my own daughters can love and admire me when they?re older as much as his daughter Evelyn loves and admires her daddy. ?Raymond also made me feel welcome in my wife?s extended family, and I will always be grateful to him for that gift.

Raymond?s decline and death to lung cancer were only shocking because he had seemed so invincible. ?Radiantly confident, endlessly hard working, with a tall frame and a broad muscular chest, well into his sixties Raymond Lo seemed as though he would live forever. ?By the time my wife and I moved to Atlanta, about ten minutes from his home, ?Uncle Raymond? was already in decline. ?Time seemed to have caught up with him, after he had outrun it all those years. ?He was quieter, more weary. ?He survived his variety of lung cancer longer than anyone had a right to expect, but finally it took his life.

Raymond and Kendra were beautiful people who lived rich and happy lives, but they were very different. ?About the only thing they have in common is that they?re both gone, leaving families behind that will try to pick up the pieces and keep on living.

Now, employing all the philosophical and theological sophistication that was conferred upon me through my various university degrees, let me just say: death sucks. ?I hate it.

I have my beliefs. ?I believe that all things were created, that the Creator entered into history to communicate with us as a human being, and that the incarnate God defeated death, provided for eternal communion with Himself, and inaugurated a new life and a new creation that is already breaking into the world but not yet manifest. ?So I believe that death is dying. ?I believe that death has lost its sting. ?I believe that God will one day wipe away the last tear.

I hold fast to these beliefs with the passion of faith, but I?m not?certain?of them. ?On some days, they feel more like hopes than beliefs. ?I have to acknowledge it?s fully possible that I will find myself upon my death bed, I will squeeze the hands of my wife and my daughters, my heart will cease beating, my brain will fall silent, and I will simply cease to be. ?Or there could be an afterlife, but not like I imagine. ?I wish that I were resplendently certain that something awaits us after death, and something good. ?But I?m not.

I?am?certain that our lives are very brief. ?They can end swiftly and unexpectedly. ?You can be toasting your wedding anniversary one moment ? and gone the next. ?You can kiss your children goodbye as you go out on a date night ? and never kiss them again. ?I am certain that even the strongest among us will fade and perish.

I will die. ?You will too. ?How shall we then live?

I did not earn this life. ?No one owed it to me. ?It?s a gift. ?If I have a tomorrow, that too is a gift.

I?m grateful that I was raised in the arms of a loving mother. ?I?m grateful that my father and I are friends. ?That my hero once told me that I?m his hero. ?That my brother always had my back. ?That my sister came into our lives. ?That I learned of victory and defeat and how to live with both. ?That I spent lovely years in beautiful places thinking ancient thoughts. ?That the best girl I?ve ever met said yes. ?That my years have been rich with friends. ?That my firstborn loves her daddy like crazy, and that my father taught her how to fish. ?That my one-year-old smiles when I dance for her. ?And that I get to provide for the people I love by doing something I love.

Life?s too short to spend our years in resentment or bitterness. ?Life?s too short not to seek what is true and good and beautiful before nightfall. ?And life?s too short to spend your time doing anything other than what God made you to do. ?Savor the people and purposes God has given you. ?You never know when the hour of surrender will come.

With mayoral hopefuls mum, other politicians shun Students First ...

Most of the 2013 mayoral contenders are still keeping an arm?s length from a union-backed campaign to tie StudentsFirstNY?s agenda to Mitt Romney?s presidential campaign. But that hasn?t stopped a slew of other political hopefuls from throwing their support behind the effort.

New Yorkers for Great Public Schools, a coalition of public unions, community-based organizations and liberal advocacy groups, has released a list of 33 elected officials and candidates who have signed on to a pledge to refuse support from StudentsFirstNY, which is seeking to advance the education polices started by the Bloomberg administration. The list includes candidates for Manhattan and Brooklyn Borough President, Public Advocate and a slew of City Council members and state legislators.

Noticeably absent are frontrunners in the one race that New Yorkers for Great Public Schools and StudentsFirstNY hope to influence the most: the 2013 mayoral election. Only one prospective candidate, John Liu, has said he?d reject StudentsFirstNY?s support.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said last week she?d be fine accepting their support, as did long-shot Tom Allon. Former Comptroller Bill Thompson was non-committal in his response and?two other candidates, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, have stayed mum on the subject. Neither has responded to repeated requests for comment since last week.

But plenty of other elected officials and candidates for office were willing to speak out against StudentsFirstNY, according to New Yorkers for Great Public Schools. The statements that accompanied a release sent out this afternoon covered a broad range of education issues.

U.S. Congresswoman Nydia Vasquez called on class-size reduction and an end to rent-free charter school co-locations.?State Senator Liz Krueger said that fairer student funding formulas and greater professional support for teachers were ?common sense? reforms. And Councilman Mark Weprin criticized the StudentsFirstNY?s support of standardized testing, which he called a ?scourge.?

There were also plenty of references to a report last week that showed some board members of StudentsFirstNY were actively working to defeat President Obama through fundraising and personal donations. New Yorkers for Great Public Schools, which published the report, has sought to use this link to argue that StudentsFirstNY?s policies would lead to a privatized education system that would threaten jobs and put bottom-line business interests above all else.?

City Councilman Robert Jackson, a candidate for Manhattan Borough President, said the connections were ?alarming and disturbing.? State Senator Eric Adams, a candidate for Brooklyn Borough President, called StudentsFirstNY an ?ALEC-like?organization?, referring to a national group of?politicians, businesses and think-tanks that write and push for conservative legislation.

Glen Weiner, deputy director of StudentsFirstNY, said in a statement that it wasn?t surprising to see some that some elected officials were coming out in support of New Yorkers for Great Public Schools.

?A press release stating the teachers union can buy off or bully a couple of dozen politicians who think the current education system is just fine is hardly news,? Weiner said. ?In fact, it?s one of the reasons StudentsFirstNY was formed.?

DENVER (AP) ? Meet the newest campaign issue for House Democrats: Todd Akin.

From Colorado to New Hampshire to Illinois, Democrats already are using the incendiary comments about rape made by the Missouri congressman and Republican Senate candidate as a political bludgeon. In interviews, news releases and tweets, they've blasted Akin for saying victims of "legitimate rape" are able to naturally prevent pregnancy and tried to tie their opponents to legislation he's supported.

Those moves might only be the beginning, as Akin has so far refused to drop out of the race despite pleas from top Republicans, including GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and the widespread condemnation of his remarks.

"People are disgusted and appalled," said Joe Mikosi, a Democratic congressional candidate in suburban Denver, who began tying his opponent, GOP Rep. Mike Coffman, to Akin within hours of learning about his comments this past Sunday.

Mikosi sent a tweet that read, "Mike Coffman and Todd Akin have been fighting side by side against women in Congress," and posted a video online included footage of Akin praising Coffman on the House floor.

Coffman responded by calling for Akin to leave the race and decrying his rape comments as "wrong, inappropriate and hurtful to women across the country."

It's a scene repeated in House races nationwide, as Akin's comments on rape are playing a role in more than dozen House races in battleground states ? particularly those in which the incumbents joined Akin last year in co-sponsoring a resolution that would have redefined rape as "forcible rape."

Most Democrats and women's groups objected to such language, because it suggested there are different severities of rape.

In New Hampshire, Annie Kuster rapped one of Democrats' top targets, GOP Rep. Charlie Bass, saying she was "disappointed" Bass hadn't yet called for Akin to leave the Senate race. Bass quickly did so. In Illinois, another Democratic challenger, Cheri Bustos, called on her opponent, GOP Rep. Bobby Schilling, to return a $2,000 donation from Akin. Schilling did so and issued a statement expressing his disgust with Akin's remarks.

"As a father, a husband and a close friend to people who have been scarred by the evils of rape, I could never stand with someone who said something so contrary to our basic human values," he said.

In Wisconsin, Democrat Pat Kreitlow had made an issue of GOP Rep. Sean Duffy's support for legislation defining "forcible rape" even before Akin's comments. That criticism now has new life, Kreitlow said.

"People are simply amazed there are elected officials who would take these positions, to redefine rape," he said. "We were hearing about it in Wisconsin before Akin said this, and of course we're hearing a lot more about it now."

Duffy, meanwhile, followed the path of other Republicans in calling for Akin to drop his Missouri Senate bid and repudiating his comments.

In trying to link Akin to their opponents, Democrats are following a time-honored campaign tradition. When a controversial statement or issue percolates in one race, the party sensing an opportunity will invariably try and make it an issue in as many races as possible, said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College.

"This is politics 101," Pitney said. "You try to tie your opponent to an unpopular on the other side and let them figure it out."

Pitney questioned for how long Democrats will be successful in making Akin's comments an issue, but Democrats have some reason to believe that it's an election winner to highlight Republicans who oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

In the swing state of Colorado, voters have twice overwhelmingly defeated ballot measures that would have outlawed abortion in all cases, and Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet won a tight Senate contest in 2010 in part by highlighting Republican Ken Buck's views on abortion.

This year, Democratic Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who represents a suburban Denver district, is fending off a challenge from wealthy Republican beer magnate Joe Coors. After Akin's rape remark, Perlmutter reminded voters that Coors once financially supported a "personhood" measure in Colorado and tied Coors to Akin.

"Why won't Joe Coors condemn the recent 'legitimate rape' remarks of Rep. Akins that even Mitt Romney criticized?" Perlmutter said in a news release. Coors has yet to respond.

Said Coors spokeswoman Michelle Yi, "Joe completely disagrees with Rep. Akin's comments."
