Republican references to 'real Americans' incite division and fear

America is changing in ways Sarah Palin's 'real Americans' don't like. As the US diversifies, to remain relevant, the GOP must abandon divisive language that Michelle Bachmann and others have used recently and instead embrace a more unifying message.

By Bassam Gergi / July 31, 2012

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio participates in a swearing-in ceremony for then-Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) of New York, with his wife Huma Abedin in Washington January 5, 2011. Mr. Boehner called Rep. Michelle Bachmann's recent allegations that Ms. Abedin, aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodhman Clinton, had connections to the Muslim Brotherhood 'dangerous.' Op-ed contributor Bassam Gergi says 'a continued strategy within parts of the Republican Party to vilify those from diverse backgrounds as ?un-American? is incredibly shortsighted.'

Rep. Michelle Bachmann and her cohort of right-wing Republicans are using identity, religion, and race as a permanent wedge issue ? most recently in their unsubstantiated attack on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton?s Muslim aide Huma Abedin. When Ms. Bachmann was criticized for her suggestion that Ms. Abedin be investigated for potential ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh rushed to her defense.

By tapping into the powerful undercurrents of race and religion, Ms. Bachmann and others are using language to satisfy their immediate political ends, by dividing Americans and thereby America into pro- and anti-American parts.

In a diverse country built by immigrants, why are some Republicans taking this divisive approach?

At its most fundamental level, politics is about the creation of ideological communities where an individual can find a home. These political homes provide a sense of belonging and a safe place for individuals in a political and physical environment that can often seem hostile or confusing.

As documented in the 2010 Census, the United States is in the midst of a demographic transformation. Minorities, now roughly one-third of the US population, are expected to become the collective majority before the middle of the century. These changes will have a long-term cultural and political impact, but they are also fueling an immediate backlash.

It appears that a small group of Americans have met these demographic changes with a mixture of fear and anxiety. America is changing too quickly and too uncomfortably for some, and it seems they have looked to their political home for reassurance and guidance.

It is this fear of the ?un-American? that undergirds the persistent assertion by 17 percent of registered voters that President Obama is Muslim. Others label him a socialist. Such mistrust has also led to the ongoing ?birther? movement ? those who question the validity of Mr. Obama?s birth certificate, alleging he was born in Kenya. Republican celebrities like Donald Trump have at times tacitly or overtly endorsed such groups.

Instead of reassuring their members, this fringe group of Republicans has exploited the environment of mistrust to secure votes and fill their campaign coffers. By fashioning themselves as defenders of what Sarah Palin once termed ?real America,? these melancholic preachers have used nostalgia to contrive a vision of a homogeneous America that is supposedly slipping away.

PFT: McKinnie will report to Ravens camp Monday

BET's Rip The Runway 2012 - ArrivalsGetty Images

Bryant McKinnie?s back in Baltimore, with an apparently bad back.

McKinnie told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times he?s been missing from Ravens camp because he slipped and fell outside his South Florida home and twisted his lower back.

?I had an accident. I?m over it. I?m here to play football,? McKinnie said.

McKinnie?s been MIA since camp opened and was placed on the reserve/did not report list, incurring fines of $30,000 per day.

?Of course, I?m glad to be back,? McKinnie said. ?I?m kind of disappointed, though. ?I?ve been training hard, I?ve been boxing and doing all this stuff. To have a setback like this is disappointing.

?Why isn?t anybody saying I got hurt? I don?t know what people thought was going on. How I got hurt is running out of the house. It was slippery and I fell and hurt my lower back. You can?t be playing football when your back is hurting. When I fell, I said, ?I know I ain?t going out like this.??

McKinnie?s bewilderment at anyone wondering where he was ignores one significant point: With him, it?s always something.

The Vikings ran him off for being overweight, and he?s worked to get that under control with the Ravens. But they?ve moved Michael Oher to left tackle for the moment, and may be inclined to leave him there, if McKinnie can?t get on the field and do something.

NCAA set to announce Central Florida investigation results

12:13 p.m. CDT, July 30, 2012

The NCAA Committee on Infractions is scheduled to announce Tuesday morning whether UCF will face additional penalties for major recruiting violations within the football and men's basketball programs.

"UCF is committed to winning with integrity and setting the standard for NCAA compliance," UCF spokesman Grant Heston said. "Tuesday?s announcement represents the latest step in our ongoing process."

Former UCF athletics director Keith Tribble and wide receivers coach David Kelly were forced to resign in November due to their ties to the investigation. UCF men's basketball coach Donnie Jones was suspended for three Conference USA games for failing to stop Caldwell from tampering with recruits, a process that began before he was hired and appeared to be sanctioned by Tribble. Former UCF point guard A.J. Rompza missed the first 12 games of the 2011-12 season because he received money from Caldwell, who had been his mentor since the fifth grade.

NCAA investigators alleged Ken Caldwell, a former Chicago club basketball coach, was affiliated with a professional sports agent and helped steer recruits to UCF.

The Knights self imposed a long list of sanctions, including vacating wins by the basketball program and reducing scholarships after it completed an investigation concurrent with the NCAA's review.

UCF appeared before the Committee on Infractions in April to discuss the case. Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a committee member, will hold a teleconference Tuesday at 11 a.m. to discuss the NCAA's decision.

Chinese great Wang hands out lifting masterclass

Chinese weighlifting great Wang Mingjuan extended her incredible 10-year unbeaten record by totally dominating the field to win her maiden Olympic gold in the -48kg class on Saturday.

Wang's performance lifted spirits for a sport that was earlier sullied by a fresh doping offence, with the IOC kicking Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku out of the Games after testing positive for a banned steroid.

Wang's gold medal ends one of the longest-running anomalies in women's weightlifting.

Although the 26-year-old has dominated her scandal-tainted sport for a decade, she was mysteriously omitted from China's 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams, meaning she had not been able to challenge for the ultimate prize.

During that time Wang -- who this year was picked ahead of reigning world champion and compatriot Tian Yuan -- won four world championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) and the Asian Games in 2010.

Wang was diplomatic when asked about her absences from the two previous Olympics in Beijing and Athens.

"It's 70 percent hard work and 30 percent luck. I think athletes should believe in the decision-making of our leaders," she said.

Wang heaped the pressure on herself with a rushed first snatch at 88kg that saw the barbells come crashing to the ground to gasps from fans packed into the sell-out ExCel arena.

But she nailed her second effort with almost military precision.

As the only lifter left in the competition, Wang came back out to produce another fantastic snatch at 91kg, just under twice her own body weight, to give her a 4kg headstart on closest rival Hiromi Miyake of Japan.

Knees, wrists and knuckles bandaged, hair scraped roughly back in a ponytail, and sporting a white t-shirt under her red and yellow outfit, Wang then handed out a masterclass in how to clean and jerk.

Tossing the barbell up with apparent ease, Wang only entered competition with Miyake and eventual bronze medallist Ryand Chun Hwa of North Korea still lifting.

Smiling, she registered a best of 114kg to give her a combined total of 205kg.

"I wasn't thinking about being caught," said Wang. "I was just so focused on my own game, I put my heart into every lift and listened to my coach's instructions to the letter."

Miyake, who has recently moved down from the -53kg class and is the daughter of Mexico 1968 bronze medallist Yoshiyuki Miyake, claimed silver with a total of 197kg (87, 110).

"I am very very happy," said Miyake. "For years I have thought whether I could win an Olympic medal and I have done it.

"It is my third Olympics and the other times I haven't been able to do it."

There was an early shock in the snatch when reigning world silver medallist Panida Khamsri of Thailand failed to register a mark.

The former junior world champion buckled three times at 81kg, seemingly suffering an elbow injury in her second effort.

Khamsri's 17-year-old teammate Thai Sirivimon Pramongkhol almost claimed a surprise bronze, but was pipped for bronze by 1kg by North Korean Ryang Chun Hwa, who lifted 192kg (80, 112).

Wang's podium topping was the perfect start in the weighlifting for China, which topped the medal table on home soil in Beijing in 2008, claiming eight of the 15 golds on offer and one silver in an awesome display of lifting across the board.

Guinea Pigs As Pets: How to Boost Healthier, Happy Guinea Pigs ...

When you?ve ever regarded elevating guinea pigs as pets, you are not alone. Most are interested in the idea of having guinea pigs as pets, primarily due to their cuteness. Not just that, they are actually one of many simplest pets to possess. But perhaps they?ll need some consideration for both their health and safety. Much like all pets, being a responsible owner is always important. Before you go to the local pet store and bring home a pig, you should become knowledgeable on some of the basic needs for taking care of a guinea pig. Although they?re popular as pets, finding all the guinea pig data ahead of time will allow you to and your puppy like a long and happy life together. There?s a lot of information on guinea pigs that is available today, and you had be wise to assemble most of the information on guinea pigs you could before taking one home as a pet.By finding as much information as possible, and then apply it, you?re showing that they?re more than a pet, they?re a living, breathing creature. These are some general obligations essential to adequately care of guinea pig pets:Their NailsTo begin with, in the same way it is with humans, their fingernails are growing and must be attached from time to time. Or even, they will be too much time and will hurt for the pet. However, in place of using nail clippers as you?d do for yourself, using bricks, rough stones, rocks or other rough areas for your guinea pig to walk on helps them to naturally keep their nails short. Make sure that whatever you choose may have no openings that they may get caught in.If you decide to trim their fingernails with nail clippers, ensure you do not reduce them too short. When you do snip them too close, you could hit the blood vessels situated at the the top of nail. Normally, this is known as the ?rapid .? It is possible to see this area as the nails are generally distinct in color and the area containing the blood is white in color. Nevertheless, there are certain breeds that?s claws are deeper. If so, it will be difficult to see where the blood vessel in the nail lies.If the nails are clear, cut just above the pink spot. If the claws are black to black, you would be easier to trim them more regularly and not let them get too far developed to be able to make sure that you don?t cut into the blood vessel area.If you do cut the ?fast ?, they will bleed. To stop the bleeding, many pet shops sell ?Quick Stop? to stop the bleeding. If you do not have this helpful, iodine will work.Of program, until your dog is employed to this routine, they will probably squirm a little. When you have someone to help keep them constant while cutting their nails, this will make the job easier and limit cutting too deeply. Place your guinea pig in a so that their feet stick out and have the person helping you hold them still. If there is no one to help, another solution to trim their nails is to place them on a football racket so that the toe nails are sticking out the other side of the rack. Make sure to cover them with something warm to keep them calm. The TeethWithout exception, most rodents have teeth that grow constantly. You need to ensure that your guinea pig?s two front teeth do not grow too much time. If this happens, they will not have the ability to chew their food. Should this be the case, take them to the veterinarian and have their teeth cut shorter.Other methods to help them keep their teeth brief is by offering a difficult surface for them to chew on. They?re normal chewers and this may help to keep their teeth from getting too long. Items such as hay cubes, toilet document cores, or old old bread will give you them with something to chew to keep their teeth small. You?ll need to provide these things to keep your furry friend from biting on things that could hurt them, such as their wire cage or nesting box.It is also advisable to perform regular examination of their teeth to ensure nothing is damaged or broken. Damaged teeth may result inside them suffering pain or discomfort as a result. If you discover chipped or broken teeth, contact your veterinarian about what should be done to correct this problem.BrushingAnother facet of the standard care of your new puppy would be to hold their hair clean, bright and healthy. A method to do that has been regular cleaning. If along their hair is long, you?ll have to clean them daily. If their hair is limited, a times a week must be enough.A type of hair brush that works well is a baby?s brush. The brushes are often soft and mild and will not be too hard on the head. If your guinea pig has long hair, a steel greyhound brush may easily remove any knots. Standard brushing will remove excess hair, especially during the shedding season.BathesUnless they get dirty, it?s not necessary to give them a bath. Actually, guinea pigs do not just like a bath, regardless of what! They could become stressed when placed in water, and it?s been recognized to decrease their immune system as well. Guinea pigs may get their entire lives without ever requiring a shower. So, until directed by your vet, it is not necessary to let them have an it becomes necessary, ensure you work with a wash that is light to their skin. You may use shampoos which are created for kittens or infants. It?s also smart to stay away from any wash that?s medicated unless chosen by the vet.Well, there you are! Toronto Team Building Activities to produce Your Business Team More

This article has been viewed 49 times.

It is very easy for a business office staff to become satisfied. They can fall into the routine where these people become very self-sufficient and rely on their particular fellow workers less and less. While this may seem like the best thing, many office responsibilities can be accomplished quicker and better when the team really does them as a whole instead of relying on the input of only one person. In case a business is in Toronto, team building events activities from a firm like XPEERience Group can help create that ?we? mindset again.

This company specializes in Keynote Speaker Canada activities in a number of settings. Choosing the proper team building events activities is important when setting up an event such as this as it is important to be sure all staff members are happy with the events. All things considered, it would not serve a reason to alienate staff during a team building pursuits as you want everyone to sign up in the events.

One of the most popular packages with regard to Toronto team building activities is the Ultimate Xpeerience. This bundle encompasses low bodily impact activities including dodgeball, water balloon chuck, and volleyball along with more demanding team development activities like the inflatable obstacle course and also the outdoor rockwall. Most employers will have a pretty good thought of what their employees are capable of and can choose the team building activities that may work best for their staff.

The beauty of an outing such as this is that the majority of employees forget exactly why they are actually there in the first place. They are getting so much fun, they naturally form a greater bond with their other workers and improve the teamwork frame of mind that has been missing from the office. So how really does all of this actually incorporate itself back into the business office?

Something that a lot of companies will do is have a personnel meeting to discuss the outing the next time the whole staff is together in the office. Keep it very informal and talk about the various events and how your winning teams were able to perform so well. Preserve stressing how they employed each person?s strengths to aid the team perform greater.

Once this topic gets rolling, begin to bring up examples of assignments around the office that have been delayed because the ?team? had not been working together. Keep in mind this is not a disciplinary meeting, just a reinforcement of how successful it is to work together. From that point, hand out exactly the same assignment to both of these people and teams. Allow them to have a limited time to develop them and then carry a meeting later within the day to monitor development.

While there may be many people capable of pulling off of the upset victory, most of the time, the teams will be able to present a better and more complete project. This is when management can bolster the idea of how important it is to work as a team whenever possible instead of operating alone all the time. It certainly won?t be long before the entire business office benefits from the Toronto team development activities they liked during the outing.

Door clues can pinpoint home's construction date | Real Estate ...

Top 5 details to look for

Top 5 details to look for

Arrol Gellner
Inman News?

There's a little parlor trick I like to pull when I'm doing consulting at people's homes. I ask them what year their home was built, and before they can answer, I quickly stop them with a raised hand.

"No, don't tell me," I insist. After a brief show of Kreskin-like concentration, I give them my guess with a flourish. I'm almost always within five years of the correct year of construction. Often, I'm within two years, and occasionally I'm right on the money. The look of astonishment on the homeowners' faces is always gratifying.

Like most parlor tricks, this one is easy to explain. It relies on a simple and rather prosaic yardstick found in every house: its doors. Unless the place has gone through one of those ghastly home-improvement-emporium "renovations" -- in which case the owners would not bother to call me in the first place -- the doors are usually original to the house, offering a clear indication of when the place was built.

Right off the bat, a quick glance at the door panel arrangement will usually get you within 10 or 15 years of the construction date. For example, very tall doors with pairs of narrow vertical panels are a dead giveaway to Victorian-era work, yielding a construction date between 1850 and 1900. This broad range can be further narrowed using another test: The more ornate the doors, the later in the 19th century the house was built.

Doors with four stacked horizontal panels, on the other hand, indicate a Craftsman-era pedigree -- roughly 1900 to 1925. Those with a single large recessed panel indicate a vintage between 1925 and 1950 or so. Doors with no panels at all -- so-called flush or slab doors -- point to a modernist-era construction date between the early 1950s and 1980. Molded hardboard doors imitating various traditional panel arrangements point to a construction date between 1985 and the present.

The type of lockset that's installed in a door furnishes other clues. If the door has a mortise lock (evidenced by a tall, skinny plate in the door edge and doorknobs fastened to a square shaft by setscrews), the house almost certainly predates 1925, although such locks were still used in basement rooms and garages for another decade or two.

On the other hand, doors with just a small rectangular latch plate in the door edge invariably mean the house postdates 1920 -- the year when Walter Schlage invented the easier-to-install cylindrical lockset that quickly drove the mortise lock off the market.

Doorknobs, too, have a tale to tell. Mortise locksets with ornate metal or glass knobs suggest late 19th-century construction dates, while those with plain white, brown or black glass knobs are more typical of early 20th-century houses. Cylindrical locksets with knobs resembling giant glass jewels easily peg a home's construction date between 1920 and 1935.

Even hinges can provide clues. Ornate hinges with spiky ornamental pins typify Victorian-era houses. Hinges with plain leaves and ball-tipped pins hark from the Craftsman era, but remained popular through the Depression. Hinges with plain, flat-tipped pins indicate houses postdating World War II, while those with round-cornered plates are a hallmark of mass-produced prehung doors, putting a home's construction date after 1970.

(AP) ? A long-serving Air Force chaplain has left the Southern Baptist Convention after the conservative denomination publicly questioned his attendance at a same-sex civil union ceremony at his base in New Jersey.

The chaplain, Col. Timothy Wagoner, is remaining on active duty and has affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, which holds more moderate views on homosexuality and some other issues than the Southern Baptists.

"I find very little that is more important and nothing that is more exhilarating than providing for the religious freedoms and spiritual care of all service members and their families ? and will joyfully continue to do so," Wagoner said Friday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Wagoner's exit from the Southern Baptist Convention, which SBC leaders welcomed, is a direct fallout from the repeal a year ago of the "don't ask, don't tell' policy that had prevented gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military.

Gays are now able to be open about their relationships, and same-sex civil union and marriage ceremonies can take place at military installations if they are legal under state law. New Jersey recognizes civil unions, and thus the June 23 ceremony uniting Tech. Sgt. Erwynn Umali and civilian Will Behrens had legal stature.

Wagoner ? the senior chaplain at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst ? had made clear he would not officiate at such ceremonies, which the Southern Baptists do not condone.

However, Wagoner had told The AP ? in an interview a few days after the ceremony ? that he decided to attend as a show of support for the base community, for Umali, and for the Evangelical Lutheran chaplain, Col. Kay Reeb, who presided over it.

"I wouldn't miss it," Wagoner said, describing the ceremony as beautiful.

On July 13, a week after the AP story appeared, the Southern Baptists' official Baptist Press news service ran an article conveying the message that South Baptist military chaplains do not support same-sex civil unions or marriages.

It quoted Wagoner as saying, "''My intention was never to embarrass or misrepresent the Southern Baptists, whom I have faithfully served for 30 years as a pastor and military chaplain."

On July 20, another Baptist Press article appeared, announcing that Wagoner was leaving the Southern Baptist Convention.

It quoted Kevin Ezell, president of the SBC's North American Mission Board, as saying, "When it comes to what our chaplains believe and practice, we do ask and we do expect them to tell."

"We only want to endorse chaplains who can support Baptist doctrine and belief without reservation," Ezell said. "If an SBC chaplain concludes he cannot conduct his ministry in harmony with SBC beliefs and doctrine, then it is best to part ways."

The U.S. military requires that all of its chaplains have the endorsement of an established faith group. According to recent Pentagon figures, the Southern Baptists are the largest endorser ? accounting for 450 of the roughly 2,930 active-duty chaplains.

Professor David Key, director of Baptist Studies at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, predicted that Wagoner's departure from the Southern Baptists might be the first of many as their chaplains try to reconcile conflicting loyalties.

"The SBC has been defined by its anti-gay stance," Key said. "They now find themselves not just out of synch with growing segments of society but also out of synch with the U.S. military."

"This may be the beginning of a wave of resignations," Key said. "Showing affirmation for gay and lesbian soldiers is what the military wants, and exactly what the SBC doesn't want. At the moment, it's irreconcilable."

Pentagon guidelines say that chaplains are entitled to adhere to the specific beliefs of their faith, but also should show respect for those who hold different beliefs.

"Air Force chaplains serve airmen of all backgrounds, of all faiths or no faith," said Maj. Joel Harper, an Air Force spokesman.

The Southern Baptists' executive director for chaplaincy, former Army Chief of Chaplains Douglas Carver, was quoted by Baptist Press as calling military chaplaincy "one of the toughest ministries in the Kingdom of God" ? in part because of the emphasis on multifaith, multicultural diversity.

"It's a vague environment out there, especially as our chaplains promote and defend the whole counsel of God in a post-'don't ask, don't tell' military environment," Carver said. "Our chaplains are navigating through uncharted waters, where the cultural values of the military increasingly conflict with the traditional values and beliefs of Southern Baptists."

Another retired Army chaplain, Ron Crews, said Wagoner's actions had "dishonored Southern Baptist traditions" and praised the SBC for maintaining its stance against same-sex unions. Crews is executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, a coalition of retired chaplains and other religious leaders which has warned that repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" would lead to conflicts for some chaplains from faiths that disapprove of same-sex relationships.

At the civil union ceremony, Wagoner met several gay rights activists who were in attendance, including Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign and West Point graduate Sue Fulton of OutServe, which represents gay and lesbian military personnel. Both described Wagoner as warm and gracious.

The co-director of OutServe, Air Force 1st Lt. Josh Seefried, is stationed at Wagoner's base and encounters him frequently.

"Chaplain Wagoner is one of the nicest, most sincere people I have met in my life," Seefried said in an e-mail. "He deeply cares for his job and all of us that interact with him.... He embodies the best of the chaplain corps."

Returning military Dad throws surprise ?Star Wars? party for son (VIDEO)

Rob Kiebler, center, and friends get ready to surprise his son, Danny. (YouTube)

U.S. Air Force Col. Rob Kiebler had been in Afghanistan for 14 months, serving a tour of duty and performing training exercises. The Portland, Oregon, native was not scheduled to come home to visit his wife and young son, Danny, until the end of the summer.

But Kiebler was able to schedule an early return and decided to make the surprise for his son a little more special by arranging for his "two favorite forces to coexist for one special event."

Like many kids his age, Danny's favorite thing in the world is Star Wars. So Kiebler arranged for some friends to dress in costume as characters from the two film trilogies, including Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, an Imperial officer and a pair of stormtroopers.

And thus begins what Kiebler calls, "Episode VII: A Big Surprise"

While Danny is celebrating his birthday at a local Portland restaurant, the Star Wars entourage enters. The Imperial officer informs Danny that, "We have a new Jedi that wants to introduce himself to you. Would you like to meet him?"

The robed figure then enters and removes his hood, revealing himself to be Danny's father.

"I was missing him for a long time," Danny says as the pair sat down together. And when noting that his Dad wasn't supposed to be back until the end of summer, Danny declares, "That would have been too long."

Essential Documents of 501c3 Nonprofit Company - Layton Hower

A 501c3 charitable business is definitely an business exempted in paying taxes and gets the capacity to just accept tax-deductible contributions. A corporation is nonprofit if it is managed formally at the state level, and if has a tax-exempt status from the IRS. All nonprofit firms can?t get a 501c3 nonprofit status. To be able to turn into a 501c3 tax-exempt organization, your business has to be arranged only for fantastic, instructional, generous, spiritual, and prevention of unkindness to animals or children purposes. There are major documents that you should prepare prior to formally planning and applying for tax exemptions. Obtaining a nonprofit statement is quite important, because it will include all of the goals and wishes of a nonprofit company. It?ll likewise incorporate the precise way you want to go in achieving those wishes and aims. The vision statement is required for three main purposes first to guarantee your administrators, people and other main workers cooperate to work towards a standard goal. A thinking conference should be scheduled so that you can give everyone the chance to contribute something correct, extensive and desirable. For other individuals and potential followers will have the power to read the mission statement so as for them to completely understand the purpose of your nonprofit corporation.Just like any organizations the 2nd purpose is, your nonprofit business should be operating under the rulings of the corporate bylaws. It usually provides not merely the legally required data, but the information also handles specific methods and operations made especially for the charitable organization. There must be a Board of Directors overseeing your company. Frequently, a panel must have three or more directors whose main function is always to guide your organization in a way that it goes along towards your quest. Your organization?s success in reaching its objectives is the primary responsibility of the directors. The nonprofit bylaws have clauses that the owners should use as guidelines in regulating the organization. The clauses must manage the particular jobs and functions that include: the number of directors that include a board the method that allows the board to create exceptional committees to deal with dilemmas that occur board member treatment method processes on replacing an out board member definite characteristics of the corporate officers and directors the definite use of funds written by donors, financing money, and so on any agreements the company has with any other company or person and an insurance plan for conflict of interest. The last objective is to provide the IRS anything concrete to work on while considering your request. Home Remodeling: How to Make You New Home Energy Efficient

All things change. People grow old, the seasons move on, and houses in time will begin to deteriorate. After more than twenty years of sheltering you and your family from the elements, that Gothic-style affair will start to look like something from a horror movie. But instead of merely repairing the affected areas, how about going for a complete house makeover? If you live in Cape Cod which has a beauty all-its-own and where occasional Victorian houses still stand, then you may want to have your home nicely remodeled. You can give your family a more comfortable living space and even reduce maintenance costs which will definitely add more value to your property should you decide to sell it.

Take your windows for example. If you've been suffering from high energy costs for many years, it may be time for you to invest in Energy Star-qualified windows. These windows minimize heat accumulation and help you cut down on energy consumption by at least 10 percent. As an added incentive, the government currently offers a maximum of $200 in tax credits for those who install Energy Star-qualified windows.

If your doors are crumbling from weather exposure or for any reason, you could go for new doors made from energy-saving material. Steel and fiberglass are some favored materials in use today due to their insulation capabilities. Like Energy Star windows, they too can help reduce household energy costs. Be sure to ask your manufacturer for your new door's U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Co-Efficient and Air Leakage--lower rates for all these, the better, and Condensation Resistance, the higher rate, the better.

Cape Cod home remodeling experts will also tell you if your roof needs a makeover. If you still have energy-saving in mind, opt for green roofs. These use vegetation to minimize heat and naturally absorb water in adverse weather. While green roofs have been used in Europe for quite awhile, the practice is still relatively new in the US. If you want to be progressive, getting a green roof is the way to go.

Don't forget your bathroom. Cape Cod remodeling contractors will advise you to go for solar water heating systems to cut down on energy costs all the more. You can also keep water consumption at a minimum by installing new water closets that use at least three liters to flush.

Are you scouting for a good Cape Cod home remodeling company? Check out yellowpages.com/cape-cod-ma/home-improvements. Don't wait another twenty years to remodel your house. Everyone deserves to live in style and comfort, and you're no exception.

    Leopoldina

In a statement on the chances and limits of using bioenergy, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has come to the conclusion that in quantitative terms, bioenergy plays a minor role in the transition to renewable, sustainable energy sources in Germany at the present time and probably in the future. Bioenergy requires more surface area, is associated with higher greenhouse gas emissions and is more harmful to the environment than other renewable sources such as photovoltaic, solar thermal energy and wind energy. In addition, energy crops potentially compete with food crops. The report recommends finding strategies for saving energy and increasing energy efficiency.

The Leopoldina's statement "Bioenergy Chances and Limits" was compiled by a working group of more than 20 expert scientists established in 2010. The report provides recommendations for using bioenergy, defined as energy obtained from burning of non-fossil plant biomass or biofuels derived primarily from biomass.

The statement also outlines under which conditions the utilization of bioenergy is appropriate and what kind of technologies are currently available or are being developed to convert biomass into biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel. In addition, it introduces various scientific approaches aimed at producing hydrogen from water in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

    ###

The statement extends earlier Leopoldina reports on the topic of energy: "Konzept fr ein integriertes Energieforschungsprogramm fr Deutschland", 2009 ("Concept for an Integrated Energy Research Programme for Germany, 2009") and "Energy- and research-policy recommendations following the events in Fukushima", 2011.

The report is available as a short version in German and English and as detailed English version, in which the statements are supported by scientific documentation.

Both versions can be accessed at: http://www.leopoldina.org/en/policy-advice/statements-and-recommendations/national-recommendations/

Berlinale Talent Campus #11 Call for Entries | EYES IN

The eleventh Berlinale Talent Campus will invite 300 emerging filmmakers from all over the world (directors, screenwriters, producers, distributors, actors, cinematographers, editors, production designers, sound designers/score composers, and film critics) during the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. The Campus will take place at the Hebbel am Ufer Theatre (HAU 1-3) in Berlin-Kreuzberg from February 9-14, 2013 with the title "Some Like It Hot".

Good films should keep people glued to the screen. But what makes a film great entertainment? The diversity of genres and formats, and the capacity to successfully switch between them has always been a challenge, especially for filmmakers who have recently entered the film industry. ?Getting to know the rules of the game is one thing, daring to break these rules and create a space to be playful and unconventional is pivotal. Emerging filmmakers will exchange thoughts with established industry experts on the intricacies of entertainment, how to push storytelling to unexpected levels and how to reach the heart of the audience,? says Campus programme manager Matthijs Wouter Knol.

The Berlinale Talent Campus brings emerging filmmakers and seasoned film professionals together and offers them a platform to refresh their views, discover new horizons, find fellow filmmaking collaborators and discuss new trends and developments in contemporary cinema and media. The application can be found online at www.berlinale-talentcampus.de, deadline is September 20, 2012.

Looking for scripts (fiction, documentary and short films), talented sound designers and emerging distributors:

Filmmakers can apply for intensive mentoring through the diverse Campus hands-on training programmes. In 2013, these programmes range from Script and Doc Station (20 scripts in development), Talent Project Market (10 finalised scripts), Talent Actors Stage and Talent Press to Campus Studio (for editing and post-production) and will include the new Short Film Station and Sound Studio.
At the Short Film Station, ten filmmakers with short film projects will work with scriptwriting experts and be connected to emerging producers and the international short film industry. The Short Film Station is organised in collaboration with Berlinale Shorts, AG Kurzfilm, KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg and is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

At the Sound Studio, sound designers and score composers receive professional guidance on improving their work and get a chance to connect at an early stage with screenwriters and directors.
Finally, the Campus will continue in 2013 to select a group of emerging distributors from all over the world to bring filmmakers at the Campus together with emerging distributors who can help them to define and reach their audiences.

The Berlinale Talent Campus is an initiative of the Berlin International Film Festival, a business division of the Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media , in co-operation with MEDIA - Training programme of the European Union, Robert Bosch Stiftung and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

Anti-matter universe sought by space-based detector

    GENEVA | Wed Jul 25, 2012 3:18pm EDT

GENEVA (Reuters) - A seven metric ton particle detector parked for over a year on the International Space Station (ISS) aims to establish whether there is an unseen "dark universe" woven into the cosmos, the scientist leading the project said on Wednesday.

And the detector, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer or AMS, has already broken all records in registering some 17 billion cosmic rays and storing data on them for analysis, Nobel physics laureate Samuel Ting told a news conference.

"The question is: where is the universe made from anti-matter?" said Ting. "It could be out there somewhere far away producing particles that we could detect with the AMS."

Physicists say that the event 13.7 billion years ago that brought the known universe into existence and has been dubbed the "Big Bang" must have created equal amounts of matter and anti-matter. But then anti-matter largely disappeared.

Why that happened is one of the great mysteries of the cosmos which are being investigated through the AMS and scientific analysts back on the ground at CERN, the European particle physics research center where Ting spoke.

The purpose of the AMS program, he said, "is to search for phenomena that so far we have not had the imagination or the technology to discover".

Some researchers have suggested that the invisible "dark matter" estimated to make up about 25 percent of the known universe could be linked to anti-matter, but others say that is highly unlikely.

    WAFTING VEIL

These scientists argue that anti-matter could not survive in the close proximity to parts of the visible cosmos that latest observations suggest dark matter occupies - sometimes like a wafting veil between planets and stars.

Matter and anti-matter are almost identical, with the same mass but opposite spin and energy charges. They can form separate parts of some elementary particles but if they are mixed together they are both destroyed instantaneously.

Ting was speaking at a news conference with a team of U.S. astronauts who took the detector, which was developed and built at CERN, up to the ISS in May last year on the last mission of the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour.

He said that so far the $2 billion detector, with its powerful magnets that bend particles with positive and negative charges in different directions, had functioned perfectly and not one of its multiple backup systems had been needed so far.

Ting, a 75-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, supervises the research on the material gathered from the AMS from CERN, guiding a team of some 500 scientists in many countries, including Russia and China.

He is however cautious about how long it will take for real discoveries to compare with the sighting announced this month of a totally new particle, believed to be the long-sought Higgs Boson, in CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

The boson is part of a force called the Higgs Field that turned the minute pieces of flying debris after the Big Bang into solid matter, bringing them together to form galaxies, stars and planets, and later life.

Asked when he expected to be able to report the first indications of dark matter or of an anti-matter mirror universe, Ting replied: "As late as possible," explaining that the analysis had to be done scrupulously and "step by step".

It would be at least 50 years "before anyone would be foolish enough to launch an experiment like this again" now that the U.S. space program was shut down and current Chinese and Russian spacecraft could not take a load like the AMS, he said.

Concrete Garden Edging Ideas to Improve Home Exteriors

Having the most expensive furniture set does not make you the owner of a gorgeous abode. Sometimes it is the outside of a home that gives beauty to its entirety. Since this is also the first thing that people notice when they enter your home, you should make sure that you will get their words of praises. So if your outside area lacks the touch, you might want to consider the following kerbing ideas.

    Do it with colours!

Using a mixture of hues for your lawn is the best way to draw someone's attention. You can steer away from earthy tints as these are really common nowadays. Instead, pick something that will blend well with the rest of scenery.

    Incorporate patterns.

There is something about patterns that make them so impressive that is why you should incorporate some into your walkways. Visitors will surely love taking leisurely paces during your next outdoor party.

    Texture is important too!

Whether you do the task yourself or call in the experts for help, make sure that the concrete materials used are rich in texture. This will certainly make a very noticeable difference.

    Add a flight of steps.

Feel like royalty by putting steps into your entryway. This adds a decorative finish to your abode, making it more inviting for your visitors. Three to four steps will be enough to achieve a splendid appearance.

Arches and curves are a plus!

To get that customised look, you can use architectural accents. Pre-cast columns and miniature pillars can make a great outcome especially if you put them near a finished concrete garden edging. For that final touch, paint them white or anything that can complement well with everything else.

    Invest in faux gardening products.

Many homeowners believe that modern gardens should look like those that are featured in magazines. For this reason, they tend to spend a huge amount of money just to attain the appeal that they want. Some of them are plastic flamingos, mirrors, water fountains, and the likes.

    Landscaping, landscaping, landscaping!

This task can be tricky; thus, the need to hire people who specialise in it. The best thing about getting their services is they can provide you with creative solutions. You can also pitch in some of your ideas, and they will do the rest.

The project may be costly yet the results can be stunning. In addition, it will not only make your home beautiful, but will also increase its market value. So, pursue your dreams and start outside!
