Mars like Hawaii? NASA rover's first soil studies help fingerprint Martian minerals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has completed initial experiments showing the mineralogy of Martian soil is similar to weathered basaltic soils of volcanic origin in Hawaii.

The minerals were identified in the first sample of Martian soil ingested recently by the rover. Curiosity used its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin) to obtain the results, which are filling gaps and adding confidence to earlier estimates of the mineralogical makeup of the dust and fine soil widespread on the Red Planet.

"We had many previous inferences and discussions about the mineralogy of Martian soil," said David Blake of NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., who is the principal investigator for CheMin. "Our quantitative results provide refined and in some cases new identifications of the minerals in this first X-ray diffraction analysis on Mars."

The identification of minerals in rocks and soil is crucial for the mission's goal to assess past environmental conditions. Each mineral records the conditions under which it formed. The chemical composition of a rock provides only ambiguous mineralogical information, as in the textbook example of the minerals diamond and graphite, which have the same chemical composition, but strikingly different structures and properties.

CheMin uses X-ray diffraction, the standard practice for geologists on Earth using much larger laboratory instruments. This method provides more accurate identifications of minerals than any method previously used on Mars. X-ray diffraction reads minerals' internal structure by recording how their crystals distinctively interact with X-rays. Innovations from Ames led to an X-ray diffraction instrument compact enough to fit inside the rover.

These NASA technological advances have resulted in other applications on Earth, including compact and portable X-ray diffraction equipment for oil and gas exploration, analysis of archaeological objects and screening of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, among other uses.

"Our team is elated with these first results from our instrument," said Blake. "They heighten our anticipation for future CheMin analyses in the months and miles ahead for Curiosity."

The specific sample for CheMin's first analysis was soil Curiosity scooped up at a patch of dust and sand that the team named Rocknest. The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 micrometers), roughly the width of a human hair. The sample has at least two components: dust distributed globally in dust storms and fine sand originating more locally. Unlike conglomerate rocks Curiosity investigated a few weeks ago, which are several billion years old and indicative of flowing water, the soil material CheMin has analyzed is more representative of modern processes on Mars.

"Much of Mars is covered with dust, and we had an incomplete understanding of its mineralogy," said David Bish, CheMin co-investigator with Indiana University in Bloomington. "We now know it is mineralogically similar to basaltic material, with significant amounts of feldspar, pyroxene and olivine, which was not unexpected. Roughly half the soil is non-crystalline material, such as volcanic glass or products from weathering of the glass. "

Bish said, "So far, the materials Curiosity has analyzed are consistent with our initial ideas of the deposits in Gale Crater recording a transition through time from a wet to dry environment. The ancient rocks, such as the conglomerates, suggest flowing water, while the minerals in the younger soil are consistent with limited interaction with water."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory Project, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity and CheMin.

Share little-used equipment with friends and neighbors; save money

Many of us have peices of equipment, like printers and gardening tools, that are helpful to have around but not used very often. Why not save a little money by splitting the cost and use of those items with someone else?

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / October 27, 2012

A lawnmower is a necessary tool, but most people don't use it every day. Hamm suggests splitting the cost and use with a neighbor.

There are a lot of pieces of equipment that are useful to have around, but that you don?t use very often.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Gardening equipment is a great example of this. Most of the gardening tools we have simply aren?t used all that often. They sit in the garage for the vast majority of the year, coming out mostly in spring and intermittently in the summer and fall.

Another great example is our home printer/scanner. We use it once every few weeks on average. Most of the time, it sits in the guest bedroom gathering dust.

When we need those things, we?re glad to have them. Most of the time, they just sit there.

The same phenomenon is true of almost everyone. We all have tools and equipment in our home that we don?t use very often, but we really need it when the right time comes around.

During the time when you?re not using it, why not share it with friends and neighbors?

This is particularly useful if?you live close to the person you?re sharing with.?For example, sharing gardening equipment with the person next door makes it very easy for both of you. One of you buys a hoe, a rake, and a shovel, while the other buys a miniature tiller, and you share the equipment freely, saving you both money.

I?ve witnessed close neighbors sharing everything from printers and wireless internet access (yes, they split the cost of it, and one house simply had a wireless repeater in it on the wall closest to the neighbor) to kitchen tools (a food processor) and yard tools. People have shared things like septic snakes, clotheslines, and coin sorters.

What?s the best way to get things started??Ask.?Ask a friend or a neighbor if they have an item that you need but will use very irregularly. Most of the time, it?s an item they use very irregularly, too, and they?ll usually be happy to lend it.

When you do so, thank them and make it very clear that they can do the same with you ? if they have a need and think you might be able to help, they should just ask.

When you hear of a neighbor or a friend needing something,?offer to lend the item.?This gets the sharing started on the right foot.

What if you both have a need that neither of you can fulfill? Split the cost somehow. Perhaps one neighbor can provide a small amount toward the purchase in exchange for regular use of the item (until you move apart, that is), which could be a very nice arrangement on something like a new gardening tool. I?d probably avoid this on a more expensive item.

Share with your neighbors and friends. It saves you both money.

States Rein in Health Insurance Expenses

Financially strapped state and local governments are saving billions of dollars on health insurance by cutting back on free coverage for employees and raising worker contributions, says USA Today.

  • The advantage government sector employees have had in health benefits over private sector employees has declined from $1,523 in 2007 to $891 in 2012.
  • Similarly, the share of full-time government employees paying nothing for their coverage declined from 39 percent in 2007 to 30 percent in 2012.
  • Yet that number is still higher than the 17 percent of private sector workers that pay nothing for their coverage.
  • Moreover, paycheck withdrawals for health insurance are the same for public and private employees at about $425 a month for the family health coverage.

Government employees still benefit from more generous benefits such as lower copayments and deductibles and more choices.

The reductions in benefits for public sector employees stems from the efforts of Republican governors to reduce the costs of employee benefits. State officials have sparred with public employee unions in places like New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin and other states.

Public sector employees are taking the fight to courts and legislatures to protect their benefits. They argue that they have already made sacrifices such as taking wage freezes in order to protect health benefits.

Studio Foxhoven: Mall Adventures

We were only shopping for socks. The lure of the mall, however, offered to transform this ordinary?sock shopping trip into a wonderful afternoon mother-daughter outing. It wouldn't hurt just to walk?through, would it?

I miss the old Lakeside Mall. Anchored by Montgomery Wards on the west end, and Target on the east,?the mall made up the largest part of the unincorporated town of Lakeside, Colorado. The rest of the?town consists of Lakeside Amusement Park and nine houses, all along Sheridan Blvd, between 44th?avenue and the Amusement Park parking lot. The 2010 census lists the population as 8.

Once many of the stores in the mall went out of business, they brought in all sorts of groups in an?attempt to stay profitable. Opening the doors from the Target store into the mall, we would never know?what we would find. One day, the space might be populated by tables filled with comic books and?baseball cards. Another day, it was an antique mart.

On this memorable sock shopping trip, there were birds. Birdcages with birds were on tables, in some?places stacked two or three high. The tables went the entire length of the mall. We saw bunches of?budgies, canaries, finches, and a plethora of pigeons and parrots. As my daughter and I love birds, we?spent a happy afternoon wandering through the displays.

At the end of the mall, there was a space where a large store had been. The space was far from empty,?however. Chairs had been set up and people were sitting and watching as a man in the front of the room?pointed to a particularly nice, large birdcage. We decided to wander in. Perhaps the man was a bird?expert, lecturing on the care and feeding of cockatiels or African Greys.

As we entered the room, a nice lady gave us a piece of paper with a number on it. It was a clue. The?man up front was not lecturing. We watched as several nice cages were auctioned off, and then . . . a?small double cage was brought out. I was impressed. It was made mostly of wood with wire doors and?the two cages were side by side. This couldn't have been meant for birds! In fact, wouldn't it be just?perfect for the two small bunnies we had just adopted?

The bidding started at the ridiculously low price of $5. I held up my card. How could I pass up a deal?like this? The auctioneer looked around, searching for someone else to raise the price. After what?seemed a long time, a large bored looking man raised his card. The bid was up to $10 now. I didn't?hesitate. My card went up - $15 for the double cage. The auctioneer glanced around again, looking?expectantly at the bored man, with no result. Going once, twice . . . ?SOLD to the mother/daughter team?in the back of the room.

I couldn't believe my luck! Most of the cages had gone for prices upwards of $50; a particularly nice?one having gone for over $300. Birdcages were not cheap. Of course, this cage didn't look like a typical?birdcage, but then, we were buying it for our rabbits.Oh-oh!

I brought my number to the table and paid the same nice lady who had given us the cards. Then we?went to pick up our purchase. Funny, it looked a lot smaller from the back of the room. They agreed to?hold it there while I pulled the car up close to the door. Then we managed to push, drag, and half carry?it out the door, down the hall, and out of the mall, to where the car was waiting.

Then came the next challenge. We tried turning the cage side-ways and upside-down, attempting to?force it into the trunk, then the back seat. I briefly considered tying it to the top of the car, but realized?quickly we could never lift it that high. A mostly wood cage weighs a lot more than a mostly wire cage. ?During our struggle, numerous other birdcage buyers made their way out the door and loaded up their?cars, trucks, and vans, without a hitch. Eventually, the auctioneer came out as well. I think he felt sorry?for us. He stopped, looked at what we were trying to do, and offered wise advice.

?You're never gonna get that thing in there, you know.?

I told him I had figured that out already, but we had to get it home somehow. He shook his head and?asked how far we had to go. Fortunately, it was just a matter of a mile or so. He shook his head again?and asked if we had any rope. I pulled out several long pieces of heavy rope, a gift from my father-inlaw, and handed it to him. This seemed to cheer him up.?

Together, we managed to get the back edge of the cage wedged into the trunk. This left most of the?cage hanging precariously over the side, but with the rope securing the top of the trunk against the?cage, maybe we could make it a mile or so.

He shook his head again.

I don't think he believed we were really going to try it, but we did. We made it home and I proudly?showed off my bargains to my husband. Chris didn't say much, but I could tell he was impressed by the?way he raised his eyebrows. We took the cage down and hauled it into the laundry room. After much?fussing and fiddling, I had it cleaned and filled with new litter, ready for the baby bunnies to move in to?their new home. I was exhausted, but proud.

The new cage worked beautifully . . . for two whole weeks. It's amazing how quickly bunnies grow.

Panetta: N. Korea leader Kim Jong Un still a mystery

KRT via Reuters, file

Kim Jong Un succeeded his father Kim Jong Il in December.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 8:46 a.m. ET: WASHINGTON -- Whether North Korea's new leader will follow the dangerous path of his father is unclear, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Wednesday, despite worrying behavior by the reclusive state during Kim Jong Un's first year in power.

"The bottom line is we still don't know whether or not he will simply follow in the steps of his father or whether he represents a different kind of leadership for the future," Panetta said, flanked by South Korea's defense chief at a Pentagon news conference.

The still largely untested Kim Jong Un, in his late 20s, has appeared to be trying hard to soften the dour image of his dictator father, whom he succeeded in December.

He has appeared waving and smiling at public events, even attending a pop concert that included Disney characters. At times -- just as unusual for a North Korean leader --?he was accompanied by his wife.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un is married. State television made the announcement, ending weeks of speculation about the mystery woman at his side. NBC's Ed Flanagan reports.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin noted that Kim Jong Un was trying to introduce economic reforms, even though he acknowledged in the same breath that it was unclear if they could succeed.

But when it comes to the armed forces, the North Korean leader appears to moving ahead with the military-first policy of his father. Panetta pointed to evidence of North Korea's persistent preparations for more missile and nuclear tests and its ongoing uranium enrichment.

North Korean dynasty debut: Kim Jong Il's teen grandson on TV

The U.S. and South Korean defense chiefs cited North Korea's failed long-range rocket test in April.

"So they continue to behave in a provocative way that threatens the security of our country and obviously of South Korea and the region," Panetta said.

South Korea this month unveiled an agreement with the United States that extends the range of its ballistic missiles by more than twice the current limit to 800 km (497 miles). The agreement also increases the payload that South Korean ballistic missiles can carry.

North Korea claims US mainland within range of its missiles

Whether the agreement acts as a deterrent remains to be seen. Panetta expressed relief that North Korea had not followed through with threats of a "merciless military strike" over efforts by activists in South Korea to launch balloons carrying propaganda leaflets across the border.

US-Japan agree on new defense system to counter N. Korea missiles

South Korean police banned them from sending over the leaflets but some activists reportedly moved to another site near the border and launched the balloons anyway.

"I was relieved that the balloon incident, which raised concerns about potential provocation, that (it) did not occur," he said.

Elizabeth Dalziel / AP

From work to play, see pictures from inside the secretive country.

The warning of a military strike was the most explicit in months and the first since Kim Jon Un took power.

South Korea has pledged to retaliate if attacked.?

More than 30 years late, N. Korea's vast 'Hotel of Doom' nears completion

South Korea's defense minister warned the North Korean leader may yet prove to be more aggressive.

"He is still young, meaning that he may be a lot more aggressive compared to old people -- because he's still young," Kim said.?

The U.S. has nearly 30,000 troops on the southern side of the divided Korean Peninsula, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.?

Enrollees in training program become fit to be Ping instructors | The ...

Ohio University students, faculty and Athens residents interested in teaching group fitness classes and becoming personal trainers at Ping Center are more than halfway there.

Since Sept. 28, participants have been completing the seven-week Fitness Instructor Training program, run and funded by the American Council on Exercise at Ping Center.

OU has been offering the FIT program since 2008.
The program is split into two sections, one for group exercise training and one for those who want to become personal trainers, which have six and 25 enrollees, respectively.

The FIT program classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. and will continue through Nov. 7.
?In the program, participants learn through both lectures and practical application for fitness,? said Marissa Dienstag, interim fitness director at Ping Center.

The program costs $75, which covers the cost of all the materials that the American Council on Exercise provides.
?At the end of the FIT program, participants can take a test to become an ACE certified fitness instructor. The ACE test includes both written and practical application portions,? Dienstag said.

To be hired as a Ping Center instructor, students must pass a written exam, fitness assessment and interview. Those who want to become group fitness instructors must also teach a 20-minute mock fitness class, Dienstag said.
Dana Santoro, graduate assistant of the fitness program at Ping Center, teaches the personal trainer portion of the FIT program.

?In the personal trainer portion, students learn about anatomy, kinesiology, communication skills, and learn basic skills in resistance training, and cardiovascular training,? Santoro said.

Ping Center offers many different options for students to work with a FIT program certified personal trainer. Personal trainers at Ping Center can perform body composition and fitness assessments to evaluate a person?s fitness level and health risk for disease.

Personal trainers are also available for one-on-one sessions for 60- or 30-minute time frames. Prices vary based on the length and number of sessions.

CBRE Releases Data on Logistics Facilities ... - Real Estate Japan

Osaka City View

CBRE today released data on rental market trends during the third quarter of 2012 for large multitenant logistics facilities in Greater Tokyo and Greater Osaka.

Noteworthy trends

* Despite the first rise in five quarters, the Greater Tokyo area vacancy rate remained?low at 4.6%.

* The vacancy rate in Greater Osaka fell significantly to 1.9% as progress was made in filling vacancies at new facilities; occupancy at existing facilities remains at 100%.

* Scarce availability of large prime logistics facilities became evident from the firm demand; the supply-demand balance continues to be tight.

The Q3 2012 the vacancy rate for the Greater Tokyo area rose for the first time in five quarters to 4.6% due in part to one facility being completed during the quarter with vacancies available, and short-term contracts terminating for large contiguous spaces. Despite this increase, it was the third consecutive quarter of vacancy rates remaining at levels under 5%, and the vacancy rate of existing facilities remained at a low 3.2%. With the firm demand, large contiguous space has become scarcely available, pushed by continuing limited availability of large-scale facilities, and rising rent levels at facilities located in favorable locations.

Activity this quarter included operational expansions among food, apparel and Internet retail distributors. There were also cases of cost cutting initiatives that included potential reconfiguration of the tenancy area, followed by companies starting to consider relocating from the coastal area to the inland areas after the earthquake as a BCP measure.

In Greater Osaka, the vacancy rate fell to 1.9% this quarter from 8.8% the previous quarter, with the filling of vacancies by a large scale facility completed last quarter. With inquiries growing more numerous, unfilled vacancies are expected to be filled?rapidly. Meanwhile, the occupancy rate at existing buildings remained at 100% for the third consecutive quarter.

?In both Greater Tokyo and Greater Osaka, strong demand and scarcity continue at large prime facilities, and rents continued to rise at some of these facilities across Tokyo,??said Junichi Taguchi, Managing Director of Industrial Services at CBRE. ?Although supply is expected to increase from Q2 2013 onwards, leasing at facilities scheduled for supply is proceeding quite smoothly compared to the period of large supply we experienced in 2008.??

Vacancy rate computation standards

NJIT math professor calls Detroit Tigers a favorite to win World Series

NJIT math professor calls Detroit Tigers a favorite to win World Series [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 23-Oct-2012

Since the Major League Baseball Division Series and League Championship Series have determined which teams will compete in the World Series, NJIT Math Professor Bruce Bukiet has again analyzed the probability of each team taking the title.

"The Detroit Tigers have a solid advantage over the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers, who surprisingly swept the New York Yankees in four straight games in the American League Championship Series to reach the World Series, have a 58 percent chance of beating the Giants in the best of seven series," he said.

At the season's start, Bukiet used his mathematical model to project the number of wins each team should earn. While Bukiet's model picked only six of the ten post-season teams back in March (including the Tigers but not the Giants), he said that his performance was still comparable with many experts. Bukiet updates the probabilities of each team taking their series throughout the Major League Baseball post-season at http://m.njit.edu/~bukiet/baseball/playoffs12.htm.

For the National League Championship Series, Bukiet's model had the St. Louis Cardinals as large favorites (68 percent chance of winning) over the San Francisco Giants and the Cards jumped out to a 3 games to 1 lead, but the Giants won the final three games to make it into the World Series. Bukiet's model had the Tigers as slight favorites (53 percent chance of winning) over the Yankees.

On Bukiet's website, he provides the likelihood of each team taking the series in a given number of games. Going into the series, the most likely outcome (20 percent) is for the Tigers to win in five games. The Giants most likely winning scenario is their 17% chance of winning the series in seven games.

This is Bukiet's 12th year using his model to determine whether it is worthwhile to wager on games each day during the baseball season. His picks (posted on www.egrandslam.com) have led to positive results for 8 of the 12 years (counting 2012's thus far positive performance). He has also used the model to predict how teams should perform during a baseball season and these results have compared favorably with experts over the years. In addition, the method enables one to rank player performance during the season in terms of the influence on the number of wins a given player would have added (or taken away) from an average team. This allows the computation of who really should win the Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Awards. Bukiet will publish those results for 2012 in the coming week.

Bukiet's model originally appeared in the journal Operations Research. More recent improvements were published by Bukiet and his research team in the International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sports. The model computes the probability of a team with given hitters, bench, starting pitcher, lineup, relievers and home field advantage winning a game against another team.

Syrian shell hits Turkish health center: Report

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An anti-aircraft shell fired from Syria hit a health center across the border in the Reyhanli district of Turkey's Hatay province on Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of injuries, CNN Turk television said.

Turkey has bolstered its military presence along its 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria and has been responding in kind to gunfire and mortar shells hitting its territory from fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces.

The Reyhanli district governor's office said it had no immediate information on the incident.

Tension between the two neighbors, once close allies, is at its highest since Ankara turned against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last year over his violent crackdown on anti-government protests.

Turkish newspaper Milliyet said on Saturday that the Turkish military had fired on Syria 87 times, killing 12 Syrian soldiers and destroying several tanks in retaliation for Syrian shells and mortar bombs landing inside Turkey.

Turkey's Chief-of-Staff General Necdet Ozel said this month that his troops would respond "with greater force" if shells continued to land on Turkish soil, and parliament has also authorized the deployment of troops beyond Turkey, heightening fears that Syria's civil war could drag in regional powers.
