Ohio University students, faculty and Athens residents interested in teaching group fitness classes and becoming personal trainers at Ping Center are more than halfway there.
Since Sept. 28, participants have been completing the seven-week Fitness Instructor Training program, run and funded by the American Council on Exercise at Ping Center.
OU has been offering the FIT program since 2008.
The program is split into two sections, one for group exercise training and one for those who want to become personal trainers, which have six and 25 enrollees, respectively.
The FIT program classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. and will continue through Nov. 7.
?In the program, participants learn through both lectures and practical application for fitness,? said Marissa Dienstag, interim fitness director at Ping Center.
The program costs $75, which covers the cost of all the materials that the American Council on Exercise provides.
?At the end of the FIT program, participants can take a test to become an ACE certified fitness instructor. The ACE test includes both written and practical application portions,? Dienstag said.
To be hired as a Ping Center instructor, students must pass a written exam, fitness assessment and interview. Those who want to become group fitness instructors must also teach a 20-minute mock fitness class, Dienstag said.
Dana Santoro, graduate assistant of the fitness program at Ping Center, teaches the personal trainer portion of the FIT program.
?In the personal trainer portion, students learn about anatomy, kinesiology, communication skills, and learn basic skills in resistance training, and cardiovascular training,? Santoro said.
Ping Center offers many different options for students to work with a FIT program certified personal trainer. Personal trainers at Ping Center can perform body composition and fitness assessments to evaluate a person?s fitness level and health risk for disease.
Personal trainers are also available for one-on-one sessions for 60- or 30-minute time frames. Prices vary based on the length and number of sessions.
