More Baby Boomers Going Vegetarian | GoodVeg powered by ...

According to a 2012 poll conducted for the Vegetarian Resource Group, about 2.5 million Americans over the age of 55 have gone vegetarian.

Faced with a growing risk of health problems, including strokes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease, many in the baby boomer demographic have turned to a plant-based diet to protect their health.

And with Paul McCartney and Bill Clinton being among some of the most famous vegetarians, making dietary changes has become not only wise, but trendy, too.

According to a Courier-Journal article, researchers agree that eating red meat increases the risk of colorectal and other cancers and presents a greater risk of Type 2 diabetes for women who are middle-aged and older.

Further studies have revealed that eliminating meat all together can decrease one?s blood cholesterol levels by at least 10 to 15 percent.

But baby boomers who are making the switch from a meat-based to plant-based diet are urged to be careful as to eliminate the calories, nutrients, and vitamins from their diets that are necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
