After a relationship has ended, it is understandable that you may be missing your ex and looking to get back together with him. You will need to be patient; immediately after a break-up is not the time to start phoning your ex and talking about getting back together. This is likely to push him further away and make him reject the idea of another attempt at a relationship.
Take it slowly when you talk to one another - don't try to be too involved with his life to begin with. Ask how he is, and then don't feel the need to continue the conversation. Be polite, but try to avoid talking about your relationship at the beginning, as this will only bring up painful emotions. When you do feel able to discuss your past, make sure you apologise early in the conversation. Whether or not you actually did anything wrong, this shows that you accept that you had a role in the break-up and that you did not mean to hurt him. Be sincere in your apology - if it sounds forced, then he is highly unlikely to believe you and want to get back together.
Although it might be tempting to tell him that you miss him and still love him, these phrases are best avoided. You do not want to be pressuring him at this stage, and if he isn't sure about giving things another try, then this will push him further away. Instead, tell him that you would like to talk, and from there you can see how the conversation develops, and judge whether or not he would be interested in trying again.
If you are looking to get back together, then you will both need to be able to talk calmly and rationally about your past relationship and the reasons behind the break-up. There may be issues that need to be resolved before you are able to give things another go. You will need to be honest about any mistakes you may have made and apologise to him. If your relationship is going to work on the second try, you both need to be able to communicate clearly and also to trust one another.
When it comes to getting him back, you need to be open and honest when you are talking to him, but you should also avoid sounding desperate and needy, as this will seem extremely off-putting and will discourage him.
